Experience Points (XP) are gained as a reward for certain actions. When enough XP is gained, your character gains a new level.

Wakfu has a number of different types of XP, and levels, for different activities.

Spell Experience Points for Elemental Spells
Character XP for Character Level
Profession XP for Professions

XP Bonuses/Penalties[]

Averages Levels[]

You gain 100% XP your level is within 10 levels of the average level of the group of monsters you are fighting.

When the monsters' average level is 70+ levels higher than your character, it will not gain any XP.

You only gain 30% XP when the monster's average level is 80 level under your level.

Outnumbering[]

When there are more enemies than allies, each additional enemy only provides 50% of its XP.

1 player fighting 2 monsters will get 150% of the experience of a combat versus one monster.
((2-1 * 50% / 1 = 50%)
2 players fighting 5 monsters will get 175% of the experience of a combat versus two monsters.
((5-2) * 50% / 2 = 75%)
4 players fighting 6 monsters will get 125% of the experience of a combat versus 4 monsters.
((6-4) * 50% / 4 = 25%)

Also, when your group outnumbers your opponents, each additional character reduced the XP received.

Bosses[]

When calculating the XP awarded in a boss fight, you will always be considered as having fought a group of your size. (No bonus or penalty)

Note: Characters with a level lower than 1/3 of the highest level of the group will not count for this bonus

Secondary Characters[]

The second highest level character on your account will gain double XP until it is the same level as your highest level character. The third highest level character (as well as the 4th and 5th) will receive triple XP.

Challenges[]

Challenges are goals set for all player in the fight and are randomly assigned after the placement phase is finished. The Wisdom and Prospecting that they provide do not bypass the 150 cap on effective wisdom and prospecting.
